Insuring the Unusual: Policies That Make You Go ‘Huh?’

We’ve heard of insurance policies about cars, houses, and lives, but what about policies for aliens, insuring body parts, or even ghosts? Yup, they definitely exist…

For fantasy lovers, my personal favourite is Spooksafe. It provides coverage for death, injury and property damage caused by the paranormal. And it’s not just ghosts but includes creatures like werewolves and vampires! It covers costs ranging from psychological trauma to actually being turned into a vampire or werewolf, but of course, you would need proof. So… Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! Unfortunately, the company that provided this coverage, Ultraviolet, has vanished from existence. The ghosts got to them. Other companies do provide coverage for the paranormal, though, if you ever plan on becoming a ghostbuster.

Ever heard the phrase ‘Million-dollar smile’? American actress, America Ferrera, insured her teeth and gums for a jaw-dropping $10 million. There have been plenty of other celebrities insuring different parts of their bodies too; Taylor Swift insured her legs, Keith Richards insured his finger (just one finger, worth around $1.6 million), and Merv Hughes insured his mustache. Why his mustache? Because it’s iconic.

Life got you thinking about moving to another planet or being abducted by aliens anytime soon? Be sure to take out an alien abduction policy (it doesn’t cover moving to a different planet). From outpatient psychiatric care to coverage for mockery or sarcasm that victims may face from immediate family members following the abduction. Area 51 should take some notes on this. Saint Lawrence Agency, a provider of this policy, paid out a claim of $1 per year for 10 years before the victim disappeared. He probably got abducted by the aliens again.

These are not the only ones. Got cold feet on your wedding day? Raining coconuts lately? Or even afraid laughing too much will be the death of you? Don’t worry… there are policies for them all.

As Master Oogway once said: “Quit, don’t quit… Noodles, don’t noodles… You are too concerned about what was and what will be.” Just insure anything and everything, and let insurers worry about the rest.
